Captain Danzell Brooks joined the Broward Sheriff’s Office January 28, 2013 after retiring from 30 years of service at the Hollywood Police Department. Danzell Brooks began his career with the Hollywood Police Department in 1982 where he performed duties in the Patrol Division, Vice, Intelligence, Crime Suppression Unit, South Broward Drug Enforcement Unit, Internal Affairs and the Narcotics Unit as a Detective. He also worked as a School Resource Officer, participated in the PAL and initiated the “Drug Talk” program and served as the Youth Crime Watch Coordinator. Later in 1993 he was assigned to the South Broward Drug Enforcement Unit as a Sergeant working with the FBI, DEA and the Secret Service. Other assignments throughout his career include being the Commander of the Crisis Negotiation Team and the Dignitary Protection Unit
Danzell was the 1st African American at Hollywood PD to be promoted to the rank of Captain and Major. Danzell has received numerous awards and recognition throughout his distinguished 30 year career to include, Community Involvement, Continuous Service, Unit Citation, Good Conduct and Distinguished Expert. Also, Danzell was awarded the Crime Stoppers Award in 1987 in recognition of Outstanding Contribution and Support for Effective Law Enforcement.
In addition to his duties at the Hollywood Police Department, Danzell is currently an Adjunct Professor at the Union Institute and University in Miami, Florida where he teaches courses in Criminal Justice and Alternative Dispute Resolution. He is also a member of the National Organization for Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE) as well as the South Florida Chapter.
Danzell earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice from Alabama State University and a Master of Science Degree in Dispute Resolution from Nova Southeastern University. Danzell is also a graduate of the University of Louisville Southern Police Institute 46th Command Officers Management Course.
